Heat Island Effect

The City of Santa Monica continues to use black asphalt paving for their streets and parking lots.
Changing to an asphalt base with a higher reflectance (Cool Roof concept) would greatly reduce the ambient temperature in Santa Monica which would reduce the amount of energy used for building cooling.

The City of Santa Monica needs to get busy with their urban foresting so that they have more large hardwood trees that sequester carbon from the atmosphere and provide shade for streets and parking lots.

Cool ocean breezes reach Santa Monica which then raises the ambient air temperature and passes the probelm on the to Los Angeles and valley communities.

Those living within 10 miles of the Pacific Ocean do not need A/C. Coastal Cities like Santa Monica should set an example by having energy surcharges for buildings that are so badly designed that they need A/C
to operate.
