the nefarious yedoma

An AP article ran yesterday -- Scientists See New Global Warming Threat by Seth Borenstein. It highlights this week's Nature article by Walter et al. on findings re: carbon bubbling out from the permafrost.

I found the article's tone to be alarmist, starting with the first line: "New research is raising concerns that global warming may be triggering a self-perpetuating climate time bomb trapped in once-frozen permafrost." But Borenstein was working with direct quotes from scientists.

the piece also introduced a new word for me -- yedoma: " Another study earlier this summer in the journal Science found that the amount of carbon trapped in this type of permafrost - called yedoma - is much more prevalent than originally thought and may be 100 times the amount of carbon released into the air each year by the burning of fossil fuels."
